Built-in Teleconverter
The 1.4x teleconverter is built into the lens and can be engaged with a single action to extend the reach to 420mm. With it engaged, the maximum aperture becomes f/4.
Autofocus and Stabilisation
The Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) autofocus drive is quick, accurate and smooth. Vibration reduction is rated at up to 6.5 stops at the centre and edges of the frame, with a camera that supports Synchro VR. That figure is a CIPA 2024 test on a Z6III without the teleconverter, at 300mm.
Optics and Coatings
There are 30 elements in 24 groups, with 8 elements in 5 groups in the teleconverter. Among them are one each of ED, Super ED, aspherical, fluorite and SR elements. Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings are designed to reduce ghosting and flare, and the front element is fluorine coated. The diaphragm has nine blades and a rounded opening.
Handling and Build
Internal focusing and an internal zoom keep the overall length of the lens constant. The controls can be customised, and the HB-120 bayonet hood attaches and detaches easily. The tripod collar has a rubber cushion and finger grip, and takes Arca-Swiss screw-type quick-release clamps; lever-type clamps are not recommended. The magnesium alloy body is extensively sealed against dust and drips, although Nikon notes this is not guaranteed in all conditions.
