Aperture and Coating

This lens features a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture well-suited for low-light conditions, giving greater control over focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques. Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements to minimise lens flare and ghosting, and to help produce contrast-rich and colour-neutral imagery even in backlit conditions. The rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.

Hyper Sonic Motor Autofocus

The integrated Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) delivers quick and quiet autofocusing, further complemented by an optimised AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any moment.

Optical Elements and Construction

Two SLD elements, one element with a high rate of anomalous partial dispersion and a high index of refraction, and one aspherical element are incorporated within the lens design to correct chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range, helping to ensure sharpness, clarity and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting. This optical design also helps control distortion and limit vignetting. The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material along with traditional metals for precision in wide temperature variations, and the bayonet mount is made from brass for accuracy and durability.
