Optics and Sensor
The apochromatic quadruplet has no central obstruction and stays diffraction-limited from the centre of the sensor to its corners. The backlit IMX585 sensor is designed for faint signal, with 2.9 µm pixels across an 11.2 x 6.3mm area. The native field of view is 1.78° x 1.00°, and mosaics reach 3.5° x 2.00° with a maximum definition of 32MP. Live video supports Sun and Moon observing.
Modular Mount and Sky Dock
The mount is alt-azimuth, with equatorial mode supported from launch. Sky Dock is a proprietary high-speed connection rated up to 3 Gbit/s per module. Modules connect and disconnect without tools in under five seconds, a feature Vaonis calls hot connect. A second module can be added later. The mount weighs 3.5kg, each imaging module 3kg, and the single-module configuration measures 41 x 10 x 20.5cm.
Field Use
Dew control uses a built-in humidity and temperature sensor to drive the dew heater, and an electronic bubble level with an 18-LED ring assists with levelling. The Sky Guard all-sky camera has a Sony IMX676 sensor, 12MP and 185° fisheye optics. The unit is IP64 rated, works from -20°C to +40°C, and has 6 hours of battery life.
Connectivity, Storage and Filters
Wi-Fi 6, NFC and Bluetooth are supported, and Vaonis lists more than 10 simultaneous users. Images export as 8-bit JPEG, 16-bit FITS or 16-bit TIFF, and microSD cards expand storage. The filter drawer takes standard 1.25-inch filters and recognises Vaonis filters automatically, which are available late 2026 along with a full-aperture solar filter. The sealed USB-C 3.1 port offers 60W fast charging and data transfer.
