Description

The Hoya 72mm Variable Density II Filter is a 72mm ND filter from Hoya.

  • Size: 72mm
  • Type: Variable Density II
  • Construction: High-quality optical glass
  • Ring Material: Durable aluminum

Density and exposure

The filter adjusts the density from 1.5 to 9 stops, ND3 to ND400. It replaces a whole set of neutral density filters from ND3 to ND400.

For longer exposures, you can change the shutter speed without changing the aperture. It helps with preventing overexposure at wide apertures in bright light: even at 1/8000 second, f/1.4 or f/1.2 can overexpose.

The practical exposure range and light transmittance vary with the situation.

Video

For video, the filter lets cine and video cameras set the appropriate exposures in bright light to achieve a cinematic look.

Construction and fit

The filter uses high-quality optical glass from Hoya Corporation. The frame is aluminum and 10mm thick. The front thread is 77mm, and the rear thread on the lens side is 72mm.

Vignetting and lens caps

The rotatable frame gets wider than a fixed frame. Vignetting risk: APS-C wide-angle lenses below 13mm and full-frame wide-angle lenses less than 24mm. The lens cap needs to be one size bigger than the filter.

Maximum density

Near or at maximum density a cross-like dark pattern will appear across the image, and it cannot be eliminated.
